Opening the IYGU Regional Action Center in Japan
In November/December 2016 the opening of the IYGU Regional Action Center for Japan at Hiroshima, initiated by Prof. Yukio Himiyama and organized by the Japan National Committee for IGU included a series of events and presentations at the universities of Hiroshima, Kyoto, the Kyoto based “Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN)”, and at the Japanese Academy of Science, the final promoting event at the real heart of Japanese sciences organizations. The Regional Actions Center has been established as part of the Taoyaka Program, Hiroshima University with Prof Hidenori Okahashi as Director and Prof. Yoshimichi Yui as Co-Director. The center operates under the auspice of the Japanese Organization of Geographical Sciences (JOGS), including Prof. Yukio Himiyama (Hokkaido University of Education), Prof. Hiroshi Tanabe, (University of Tokyo) and Prof. Takashi Todokoro (Takasaki City University of Economics) as advisors and 12 associates, including Prof. Takashi Oguchi, University of Tokyo and Prof. Carolin Funck, Hiroshima University.
The half-day Science Forum hosted and organized by the Science Council of Japan (SCJ), the “Promotion of Grass-Root Activities towards Realization of Sustainable Society: an IYGU Initiative”, was held on December 3rd from 13:00-17:00 at the Main Hall, Science Council of Japan. It was sponsored by the Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU), Japan Organization of Geographical Sciences (JOGS) and the IYGU Hiroshima Regional Action Centre (RAC). The Science Council of Japan is the representative organization of Japanese scientist community ranging over all fields of sciences subsuming humanities, social sciences, life sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.
